About Us
Mission Statement
The mission of the Office of International Education (OIE) is to promote, establish, manage, and coordinate international education opportunities and general internationalization initiatives at the University of Utah. This includes the oversight of international exchange agreements and traditional study abroad programs, as well as academically-focused international internships, service learning, and other appropriate programs. In pursuit of these goals, OIE manages the Study Abroad Office in the Olpin Union; chairs or administratively manages several committees responsible for international activity, including the International Exchange Committee, the International Requirement Committee, the Student Fee Study Abroad Scholarship Committee, and the International Studies Board; and works with and coordinates international initiatives with other University organizations representing students, faculty, and administration.

Mark is retired US Air Force colonel and is currently an ABD PhD candidate (international relations/comparative politics) and Associate Instructor in the Political Science Department. He has had considerable international experience as a pilot and politico-military affairs specialist over his 25+ year Air Force career, including service as the US Air Attaché in China, and in 7 years as an Asia marketing manager in private business. He is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, has an MA in economics from UCLA, and graduated from the National War College in Washington, DC while simultaneously serving as a National Defense University senior research fellow and writing a book on Northeast Asian security published by the NDU press.

Amy is a University of Utah alumnus, she received her B.S. in Economics and Psychology. As the departmental assistant, Amy coordinates the IEC, IRC, ISB, and the Student Fee Scholarship Committee. She plans events for international visitors, acts as the webmaster, and promotes support for international study. She studied abroad in Cambridge, England. She enjoys swimming, writing, and eating foods from different cultures.

Jesse coordinates the University's semester and academic year exchange programs as well as advising students about summer programs and international internships in the Americas, Spain, the Middle East, and Africa. While attending the University of Utah, Jesse studied abroad three times - twice in Mexico and once in Spain. Jesse recently completed a Master's Degree in Intercultural Relations. He hopes that his next travel adventure will be in Japan.

Alison coordinates the University’s faculty-led and exchange programs in Europe, as well as affiliated study abroad programs and internships in the region. She graduated from Butler University with a B.A. in International Studies and Spanish and studied abroad in Mexico and the Southern Cone of South America. Most recently, she completed two years of service with the Peace Corps in Guatemala as an environmental education volunteer. Alison hopes to continue her international travel in Europe and Asia.

Liz coordinates the University's short term Global Health Programs in Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala and Thailand. She assists in the preliminary advising of students interested in other programs. She attended BYU and earned a B.S. in Geography. While a student, Liz studied abroad in England and Scotland, and was an assistant director and teaching assistant on programs to New Zealand and Alaska. On her own, Liz has traveled to New Zealand and Australia several times, Peru, the Caribbean, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and several island nations in the South Pacific.

Casey coordinates study abroad programs and exchanges in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia as well as administers and advises on federal scholarships for critical language study including the Boren Awards and Flagship Language Scholarships. Casey holds a B.A. in Spanish from Berea College and an M.A. in Diplomacy and International Commerce from the University of Kentucky where he was a dual Patterson and Lyman T. Johnson fellow. Casey has studied Arabic extensively both at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Arabic Immersion Program and at the American University in Cairo’s Arabic Language Institute. In 2009, was a State Department Critical Language Scholar in Advanced Arabic in Alexandria, Egypt. Additionally, Casey has studied in Austria, New Zealand, Mexico, and Spain and volunteered in Poland and Costa Rica. Prior to joining the University of Utah, Casey worked twice as a congressional intern in Washington, D.C, as a Spanish interpreter for various organizations, and a standardized testing instructor for Kaplan Test Prep. He is from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Linda supervises the budget and finance operations for the department and the study abroad programs. She also assists students with their financial questions regarding study abroad accounts. She really enjoys working with students and has been with Study Abroad for over 25 years. Linda has traveled to England, Scotland, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In her free time, Linda enjoys camping, boating, cooking, and spending time with family.

Shane Haag is an undergraduate studying vocal performance at the University of Utah. You can hear Shane’s tenor voice at many concerts and operas at the U’s school of music. Shane is the intern for International Education and Study Abroad. He has spent a summer in Northern Italy studying Italian and performing in operas such as Rigoletto, La Traviata and others. He has been to Mexico many times and served an LDS mission in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sadie is a senior who is about to graduate with a BA in English, with an emphasis on Creative Writing. She does clerical work in the Study Abroad office and helps to advise prospective travelers on study abroad information. Ever since she lived and went to kindergarten in England when she was 5, she has been enthusiastic about traveling and studying abroad. Since then, she has studied abroad 4 more times, twice with semester long programs in England and Japan, and twice with summer programs in London. Sadie plans to teach English in Japan after she graduates, and then pursue a Masters Degree in Creative Writing. More than anything, she plans to keep traveling, and will continue to seek adventures wherever she can find them.
